I know this sounds like such a basic question, but I simply had to ask.
We have a lot of things going on in our lives and in the world today and I thought it important to do a quick check in. Through various media and social media outlets, we are bombarded with negative news. There are multiple fires, multiple wars around the world, domestic terrorism, uncertainty around our government, and a dividedness that seems never ending.
Not to mention the stress you face every single day on the job. Will this transaction fall apart? Will the buyer make an offer? Will the seller accept the offer? Will I get the listing? What will the home inspection bring up? Will the property appraise? And the list goes on.
And then there’s your personal life. Sick children, college tuition payments, unexpected expenses, aging parents, mental health issues and illness. And now, so many families being displaced due to the fires.
You’re dealing with a lot!
If it is of any comfort, please know that you are not alone. Everyone is going through something, even if they don’t show it. This is why it is so important to show empathy for others. You don’t know what they are going through and the way they show up may be the best they can do that day. Show them a little grace, because one day you will need that same grace.
Take Some Time For Yourself
Real estate agents are born to give, but we need to take some time to fill back up.
Read a Book
Simply being still and reading a book can be the medicine you need. Silence your phone (your business won’t fall apart, I promise) and enjoy a little quiet time with a great book.
Take a Walk
This is a beautiful time of year and your hours are flexible so take advantage of both. Take a stroll in one of your favorite neighborhoods, your own neighborhood or in Rock Creek and simply enjoy the beauty of nature.
Take a Nap
Remember when you were in kindergarten and you had nap time? Your’re never too old for nap time. Naps are a great way to not only be still, but to get a little extra energy to take you through the rest of your day.
Practice Meditation
This is a difficult one for me. My mind is constantly racing and it takes work and practice to get it to slow down. Mindfulness meditation is a mental training practice that teaches you to slow down racing thoughts, let go of negativity, and calm both your mind and body.
Mindful meditation uses deep breathing exercises and awareness of body and mind. Practicing mindfulness meditation doesn’t require props or preparation (no need for candles, essential oils, or mantras, unless you enjoy them). To get started, all you need is a comfortable place to sit, three to five minutes of free time, and a judgment-free mindset.
Take Care of You
Please take the time to take care of yourself…whatever that looks like for you. If you think your business will suffer because you take some time for yourself, just know that it will suffer even more if you don’t.
If you don’t take care of yourself, there’s no way you can care for those around you.
